Direct Support Professional (DSP)

The Arc of Frederick County is seeking people who are interested in a part-time job opportunity as Direct Support Professionals (DSPs), who help people where they live or work or while participating in activities in our community. Great pay, flexible hours, Frederick County and Allegany County locations.
Qualifications:
- Experience in working with people who have intellectual and developmental disabilities.
- Strong belief in provision of self-determination for people who have developmental disabilities.
- A valid driver’s license and a reliable automobile to support people served with accessing their community, building natural supports, independent living, employment, and training opportunities.
- All staff are required to have an active email address or phone/voicemail or text messenger system that they check daily and respond to scheduling and other requests made to them by members of their team within one business day.
- Age 18 years or older and has a high school diploma or equivalent.
- DSPs are required to limit personal technological distractions (i.e. phone calls, social media, texts, etc.) or any other personal activities that removes direct attention from the person/people they are working with.
Duties:
- Assist individuals in implementing services specified in their Individual Person Centered Plan and to achieve their goals.
- Provide instruction to support individuals to be successful with household management, scheduling, banking, education, and with other opportunities.
- Provide support to assist individuals with participation in work, community based training and enrichment activities, and with career advancement opportunities.
- Serve as a contact/liaison between individuals, natural supports, and community members to help the person served successfully problem solve and live more independently in their community.
- Develop back-up plans incorporating an individual’s natural supports.
- Provide personal care assistance as needed.
- Form cooperative relationships with individuals with disabilities, businesses, and the general public.
- Write individual progress notes to document person’s activities and progress and provide other documentation as needed.
- Support self-advocacy and other endeavors that promote the inclusion of people in their communities.
- For staff administrating medications – verify individual receiving medication and record name of medication, dosage, and time of administration on specified forms or records.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Maintain Compliance with agency training.
Supervisor: Co-supervised by Support Coordinator and Individual Served.
